Middle East: Winter - January 2019

Happy New Year everyone! May our coming years be better than the previous ones. May we stay happy, healthy and humble always. This is the first time that I marked a new year with a journey to the countries that I've never been before. Err.. not quite right, I've been to Egypt so the statement is mostly right I guess since I've never been to Jordan, Palestine nor Israel. Three out of four :P I am super excited and frankly a bit anxious as well since that region is not well known for its peaceful existence.

I am so looking forward to visit Petra and its surrounding orangey rocks. The Dead Sea may not be the best time to visit in the winter though. No dipping and floating in the sea I suppose unless you wish to be a popsicle :P Al Aqsa Mosque and the Mount Temple are the historical treasure and a sacred place of three Abrahamic religions, a must visit. The Pyramids of Giza are an architectural wonder and it would be great if it snows lightly when we are there. Wishful thinking? A girl can only wish :P I am also looking forward to visiting Alexandria again. Alexandria, if managed well can be a nice resort city of the Mediterranean Sea.

This trip is organised by SelamatBercuti.com. Yes I did give them a not so flattering review when I went with them to the Southern Europe a few months ago but I will give them another chance just because their itinerary is more comprehensive compared to other tour companies. Let's hope they will not let us down this time round.

This trip costs RM7590 per person. If you are a senior citizen (55 years above) you will get a discount of RM100. I always wonder about this price discrimination policy. Everybody should get the senior citizen price, the company is simply making extra profit out of the younger travellers. This is unfortunately a normal practice by Muslim companies in Malaysia. It should be made illegal because it is so unIslamic. Quran clearly prohibits dual pricing. Ironic?

This tour is for 10 days and 8 nights, full board and the hotels are all 3 stars. Truthfully I am a bit worried of the 3 stars status most especially when applied to Middle Eastern hotels. Europe's 3 stars are mostly acceptable but Middle East? Let's just see how it will turn out shall we? Hope for the best, prepare for the worst :P

Our itinerary are as follows:
1 January 2019    Kuala Lumpur - Muscat - Amman
2 January 2019    Amman - Petra - Dead Sea - Amman
3 January 2019    Amman - Jericho - Jerusalem
4 January 2019    Jerusalem
5 January 2019    Jerusalem - Hebron - Jerusalem
6 January 2019    Jerusalem - Taba - Mount Sinai
7 January 2019    Mount Sinai - Suez - Cairo
8 January 2019    Cairo - Alexandria - Cairo
9 January 2019    Cairo
10 January 2019  Cairo - Muscat - Kuala Lumpur

This is going to be my first time flying via Oman Air. I noticed that a lot of tour companies started using this airline only recently. They must offer a very competitive price out of Malaysia. So let's hope the airline is as good as Qatar Airways.

I will upload the videos and photos as and when possible during the trip. You can find them here:

P.S Maybe I shouldn't count Oman but then again I do "reached" the country even though just at the airport :P Good reason to properly visit the country later right?

POST MORTEM (updated 27 February 2019)

Sorry it took me awhile to do a post mortem for this trip. Too lazy to switch on my laptop to write the review. I am currently writing this on my tablet using my newly bought bluetooth keyboard and touch pen. Hopefully with these new gadgets, future post mortem write-ups will be more timely :P

Tour Company: Easy to deal with. The write up of information and reminders prior to departure was very well done. The timing of the creation of WhatsApp group (around one month before departure) for this trip was also good, not too early nor too late.

For this tour they provided us with a daily bottled water each. In Egypt, they even gave us two bottles a day. I suspect this was due to the generosity of our tour leader. Hopefully he will not be in trouble with the company :P

Itinerary: The itinerary was good. We flew into Amman and go back via Cairo. There were no backtrack. The combination of the countries was also a good synergy.

The decision to use Oman Air was a good one because we arrived late in the afternoon and immediately checked into the hotel to rest after a long journey. The sightseeing only started the next day after a good night sleep. On the last day we took a late flight out of Egypt, which enabled us to cram another full day of visits and shopping before flying home.

If I want to gripe, maybe the trip to Alexandria should be done on the last day and then we took the flight out of Alexandria instead of Cairo to go home. As it is people were quite tired after the long journey from Mount Sinai to Cairo the day before and having to start very early in the morning for the day trip to Alexandria the next day. To/fro journey from Cairo to Alexandria took 6+ hours. A waste of precious tour time.

Another thing to improve is in the interest of time, the journey to the Treasury in Petra should be made by horse or horse carriage (to be included in the tour price). The journey back to the main entrance via horse or horse carriage will be optional (own pocket) since walking back to the main entrance is an experience not to be missed. There are so many nice spots to take excellent photos along the way!

Airlines: Our first time flying via Oman Air. The plane to/fro Kuala Lumpur was comfortable with 2-4-2 seating arrangement which is the most efficient for a long haul flight. The plane to/fro Muscat was small with seating arrangement 3-3. So uncomfortable. Inflight meals were just acceptable. No vanity pack either. The flights were all on time with short transits in Muscat.

Tour Leader: Our Malaysian tour leader Azlan was very good. He has the right temperament to be in the service industry; calm, polite, patient,  humble and helpful. I am particularly happy with his treatment of my 70 year old mother.

I love the surprise dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe in Cairo that he managed to pull off just before we fly home. Very smart move because Malaysians love to shop at HRC, so why not hit two birds with one stone? Furthermore, by that time we can no longer stomach the local food, so burger and fries were very much welcomed.

What I don't like is he loves to take candid photos of the group! Less candid and more structured photos are better I think. Why waste storage space for pictures that people ended up deleting anyway? :P

Local Tour Guide: This trip is quite unique because we had three dedicated tour guides. The first one was a Jordanian named Firaz. This guy is so cheerful. He can speak Indonesian so his commentary was bilingual, English and Indonesian. I wish he would stick to English only because I can't really understand his Indonesian :P

Our second tour guide is Mahmoud, he is a Jordanian by birth but since he migrated to Jerusalem back in the 60s, his citizenship and resident status are complicated. He can freely go to Israel, Palestine and Jordan but cannot vote in any of those countries. This guy's English is superb. He took his job as a guide seriously with long explanation at every place we visited. Unfortunately he was also a bit moody. He was quite cheerful on our last day with him though.

Our last guide was an Egyptian. His name is Hanawi. I can't really understand his English but overall I think he was ok. In Egypt we also had a company representative, Yusuf who made sure that we passed through the immigration without any problem at the point of entrance and exit. Egypt somehow reminded me of the joke "how many people do you need to change a light bulb?". Probably because they have so many people that they needed to create the extra bureaucratic steps just so they have jobs for them. Even the Israel immigration was not as troublesome!

Bus: My first experience having to use five separate buses in one tour. The first bus in Jordan was too small that all our luggage cannot fit into the luggage compartment thus the desperate need for the second bus. The second bus was used to bring us from Amman to the Jordan/Israel crossing at the King Hussein (Allenby) Bridge Terminal. The third bus was for our tour in Palestine and Israel. The fourth bus was not in the picture if not for the third bus' battery died on us on the day we were to leave Israel to go to Egypt. The fifth bus was for our trip in Egypt. Luckily for us the fifth bus was very new and comfortable. Can't say the same for the other buses though.

Bus Driver: All the bus drivers were not friendly. Not very helpful either. Luckily for us they practised safe driving :) In Egypt, during the long journey from Taba to Cairo, our bus had two drivers and one armed security officer. I think Egypt is the only country that I have visited who required an armed security officer inside the bus. In 2007, when we visited Abu Simbel, we had an army convoy escorting us but no army personnel inside the bus.

Hotels: For this trip, we stayed at four hotels. Only one hotel in Amman was acceptable, the rest were terrible. The hotel in Jerusalem was so small and dated. The bathroom was mouldy.

The hotel in Saint Catherine (Mount Sinai) was dated, without WiFi and offered only one propaganda channel in a cubic shaped TV. All that were tolerable since we arrived late at night and left early the next morning. The unforgivable thing was the room was without heater and no thick blanket either. It was crazy cold!

I thought the hotel in Saint Catherine was the worst since it was a small town with little hotel choices, who would have thought that the hotel in Cairo was much worse? You would think that Cairo being the capital had better 3* hotel choices. Obviously not. The hotel that we stayed in had a good sized room and bathroom but it was quite dirty. The main lift was also smelly. The cleaners obviously did not do their job well. In fact one cleaner instead of doing his job, was busy knocking on the guest's door asking for tips.

This hotel's bedsheets are the worst in my two decades of travels. It was so shabby that I honestly wonder what were they thinking? The sheets were so not smooth (I don't even know how to explain in English. Malay has a better vocabulary; kusam, lusuh, berbulu) that I think my rags at home are of better quality than their bedsheets. Egypt really need to buck up. Their hospitality industry sucks!

Hotel Breakfasts: The breakfast buffets were mostly acceptable. There were odd dish here and there that were surprisingly tasty. Service was good especially in Jerusalem. The chef cum waiter was very attentive. The exception was our last breakfast in Cairo. They actually ran out of plates and cups! And there were not even one waiter in sight to remedy the situation. The dishes were also chipped and some not even washed properly.

Lunches: We had almost all the lunches at the local restaurants. The food was plentiful and quite good. We had only one lunch at the hotel, in Jerusalem. It was after Friday prayer, so the Chef cooked for us maqluba, a Palestinian specialty.

My favourite was our last lunch in Cairo. The restaurant served us ample strawberries for desserts. They were so sweet. I ate one plateful of them. Super delicious!

My least favourite lunch was in Alexandria. The soup was not edible, the bananas were bruised, the fish was served cold and the prawn still have its tentacles. Shameful when people have no pride in their work. Go check the picture in my instagram if you're in doubt. #mksHolidayFood

Dinners: Dinners were mostly at the hotel except for two in Cairo. The dinner buffets at the hotel were acceptable. The Chef of the hotel in Jerusalem was so nice that he cooked for us fried chicken and french fries when we requested something different than the usual Middle Eastern fare. Too bad the fried chicken were a bit overcooked but it was the thoughts that count right? Very much appreciated :)

Dinner at the Sunz Restaurant in Cairo was the worst. The main fare were not that bad I think but frankly by that time I ate just so I'm not hungry but the desserts were terrible. The cakes were stale and the fruits were not served fresh. Luckily nobody ended up with stomachache due to eating questionable quality of raw fruits and vegetables.

The best dinner was at the Cairo Hard Rock Cafe, just before we flew home. After more than a week of Middle Eastern style of cooking, was it any wonder we appreciated the simple meal of burgers and fries? :P

Rapport With Fellow Travellers: This group took a bit of time to warm up with each other. We didn't immediately click on the first day unlike my previous Southern Europe trip. But after a few days we were more familiar and comfortable to make silly jokes in the bus and tease each other :P

Timing: January is a good month to make a trip to this region. The temperature was very pleasant. Not hot and not so cold either. Only in Mount Sinai it was a bit cold at night and early morning but by mid morning the temperature was back to pleasant. I was hoping for snow, obviously that wish did not come true :P I thought the Dead Sea would be super cold. Surprisingly the water was quite warm, so you can actually dip yourself in the Dead Sea in January.

Overall: I think this is one of the most interesting trips that I've taken throughout all my travels. I like the experience of going through the suspenseful Israeli immigration. The border crossing between the Israel and Egypt in Taba is also different than going into Egypt via Cairo International Airport.

The itinerary prepared by SelamatBercuti.com was the reason why I decided to join them again despite the not so good experience during the Southern Europe trip. Major fault was they didn't bring us to Masjid Omar despite being listed in the itinerary. I don't know why most of Muslim tour companies that I've joined are quite lackadaisical about delivering what they promised in the itinerary.

I personally think that SelamatBercuti.com have the potential to be an excellent tour company if only they make more effort to the quality of hotels and food provided during the trip AND most importantly to train their tour leaders to ensure that all the places of interest mentioned in the itinerary are covered during the trip. If it cannot be covered due to unforeseen circumstances, the fact must be made known to the participants during the trip.

I've uploaded 233 posts in my Instagram account mkhasha.n.travels. Do check it out. If you wish to follow, make sure your instagram account have a profile picture.

Bye for now. Until my next post :)

Southern Europe: Autumn - October 2018

After five months of being country bound, we are ready to embark on a new adventure. Well not really 100% new since we have been to some of the cities before but this is going to be our first time visiting Monaco. Hurray! My first visit to Italy was during summer back in year 2003, it was so hot back then. So not enjoyable. This time round I'm hoping that the weather will be more pleasant :)

This tour is organised by Wan Vacation Sdn Bhd a.k.a selamatbercuti.com. Our first trip with this company. This company seems to be employing a lot of young people. Let's hope they are more energetic and well trained. The price for this 12 days 9 nights half board tour is RM8k per person. The hotels are suppose to be 4 star and the tour is inclusive of breakfasts and dinners. Lunches are on our own. We are flying Qatar Airways. Love their inflight meals :)

The itinerary is as follows:
18 October 2018    Kuala Lumpur - Doha
19 October 2018    Doha - Rome
20 October 2018    Rome - Pisa - Florence
21 October 2018    Florence - Modena - Venice
22 October 2018    Venice
23 October 2018    Venice - Bergamo - Milan
24 October 2018    Milan - Serravalle - Eze Village - Nice
25 October 2018    Nice - Cannes - Monaco - Nice
26 October 2018    Nice - Barcelona
27 October 2018    Barcelona
28 October 2018    Barcelona - Doha
29 October 2018    Doha - Kuala Lumpur

I am so looking forward to take pictures with the Leaning Tower of Pisa again. I'm going to bring a tripod and will try to take picture while "pushing" the tower this time round. I also just bought a 360 camera. Quite excited to see what I can do with it. I hope the weather will cooperate :P

I will upload the videos and photos as and when possible during the trip. You can find them here:

POST MORTEM (updated 14 November 2018)

As promised, a more timely post mortem. I was thinking of the best format to do it so that it is more organised and easier for me to write :)

Tour Company: Quite professional and easy to deal with. Responded well to queries. The write up of information and reminders prior to departure was very well done. For this tour however they did not provide us with a daily bottled water, which I find to be a bit stingy.

Itinerary: On paper it looks good but in practice it was very tiring for the group members. On the first day after 18 hours journey from KL to Rome, we continued with another 12 hours of tour plus dinner. We only checked in the hotel after dinner at around 9 pm. For the rest of the tour, my personal opinion is too much time given for shopping and too little time allocated for sightseeing. I don't think we spent even an hour at Park Guell and yet on the same day, hours were given to shop at La Rambla and later at the football stadium. Visit to Colosseum was also super short.

Airlines: We flew via Qatar Airways, my favourite airline. It has been awhile since I flew with them so I can see that they did some cost cutting measure. The vanity set container was now plastic and the inflight meals and snacks size have shrunked. Luckily they still tasted good :P We had a fabulously short transit time in Doha and the flights were all on time. Excellent!

Tour Leader: Our Malaysian tour leader (Rozana) was polite and capable but a bit laidback. You can tell that she is an experienced tour leader but during this tour she merely did the bare necessity. She didn't bother monitoring the loading or unloading of our luggage, didn't wait/assist until tax refund process was completed for all tour members and didn't even explain the history of the places that we visited (those without local tour guide). One good extra thing that she did was she bought us a bit of salad during one dinner when we complained that the meals provided during this tour lacked vegetables.

Local Tour Guide: This tour did not have a dedicated local tour guide who follows us throughout the tour. We did have city tour guides in Rome, Florence, Venice and Barcelona. The ones in Rome (Irene) and Venice (Monique) were nice and helpful. Florence's was ok but the Barcelona's was a bit impatient.

Bus: Big, new and very comfortable. No WiFi provided at the bus. The bus was not cleaned everyday though unlike some other good tour companies.

Bus Driver: Our bus driver Jorges (from Croatia) was polite and drove well. He just fullfilled the minimum requirement of his job. Didn't even bother to find a drop off place that is nearer so that the tour members who are mostly senior citizen don't have to walk so far. In almost all hotels in Italy we have to push our luggage very far from the bus to the hotel lobby. At one hotel he even dropped us off outside the hotel compound!

Hotels: Acceptable. Some quite good, some a bit dated. All with good WiFi in the rooms.

Hotel Breakfasts: Mostly good breakfast spread with wonderful coffee machines. No complain!

Dinners: Stingy with a capital S! Of my two decades of travels, I think this is the most stingy dinners ever provided by a tour company. No dessert, no after meal coffee/tea. In fact during one dinner, they served us only plain white rice and lamb curry. Not even a vegetable dish!! We went to Europe but funnily throughout the trip (except in Barcelona) we were served Indian food! In Barcelona we were given Malaysian food. The tour company chose the cheapest in the menu and the portion given was also very small to be shared by so many. Fortunately the food were mostly tasty. Do check out my instagram #mksHolidayFood for photo evidence :P

Rapport With Fellow Travellers: Excellent rapport. This group clicked from the very first day even though we didn't know one another prior to the tour. All are world travellers so no issue with punctuality. Everybody was on time every time. They truly love shopping. They shopped every time we stopped from street vendors to luxury outlets. None are safe :P Lovely and fun group!

Timing: We had a great weather. Not so hot and not so cold. The sun was shining bright except for in Barcelona, it was raining for one whole day! By the end of the day my hair looked like I was having a shower and my poor 360 camera lens, so wet! It was such a challenging time to take 360 photos :P

Overall: Except for the stingy dinners, non delivery of some of the places in the itinerary and the long distance between the loading/unloading luggage area to the hotel lobby, this tour was quite wonderful mostly due to the rapport with our fellow travellers. We had a great time and went home somewhat happy with the whole experience :)

FURTHER UPDATES (on 30 December 2018)

I have uploaded 168 posts in my instagram account mkhasha.n.travels (#mks2018SouthernEurope). This time round the videos have no voice commentary whatsoever. I think my voice spoiled the videos :P Do check it out! I haven't uploaded any 360 photos yet. Still mulling over what kind of photos I wish to upload there and the format.

I don't go around checking the itinerary during any trip. I trust the tour leader will deliver whatever written in the itinerary. Thus, I will normally only find out this unethical practice of not delivering on their promise after I'm back in Malaysia, while cross referencing my photos with the itinerary. For this trip, while in Rome, they did not bring us to the Roman Forum, Altar of the Fatherland, Trojan's Column and Trojan's Market. Even the visit to the Spanish Steps were not scheduled until I personally requested to go since it was a walking distance from the Trevi Fountain. In Monaco, the tour leader did not bring us to the Prince's Palace of Monaco. How unforgiveable!

Balkan & Greece: Spring - April/May 2018

I am off to another new adventure. This time round I am going to visit Balkan in spring and finally my dream to go to Greece will hopefully come true.

My previous two trips to this region was during autumn and winter. The autumn trip was quite good but the winter trip was terrible. Dark and cold. Not to be repeated. So being a bit kiasu, I've decided to go again but this time round I am expecting lots of flowers and clear blue sky :)

This time I am following Via Vacation. My first trip with them. The full board 14 days 11 nights cost RM7.2k per person. Superb value for money. Will give an update after I'm back to determine whether is it truly value for money.

Our route during this trip :)
Our itinerary for this trip is as follows:
20 April 2018    Kuala Lumpur - Istanbul
21 April 2018    Istanbul - Zagreb
22 April 2018    Zagreb - Plitvice Lake - Bihac
23 April 2018    Bihac - Travnik - Sarajevo
24 April 2018    Sarajevo
25 April 2018    Sarajevo - Jablanica - Blagaj - Mostar
26 April 2018    Mostar
27 April 2018    Mostar - Dubrovnik - Kotor - Budva
28 April 2018    Budva - Bar - Shkoder
29 April 2018    Shkoder - Tirana - Ohrid
30 April 2018    Ohrid - Kalambaka
1 May 2018       Kalambaka - Athens
2 May 2018       Athens - Istanbul
3 May 2018       Istanbul - Kuala Lumpur

From the itinerary it looks very hectic. We have to change hotel almost everyday. Only in Sarajevo and Mostar we will stay for 2 nights. I'm looking forward to visit Mostar, Dubrovnik, Kotor and Ohrid again. Most especially Ohrid. The first time I went there, it was raining. The second time, when we reached there it was already dark. Cannot even see anything around the famous lake. So this time round I am expecting clear blue sky so that I can take nice photos at the lake :P

POST MORTEM (updated 15 October 2018)

Sorry for the late update. No mood to write! Don't worry I will endeavour to do better next time :P

Likes:
  1. Our Malaysian tour leader (Hisham), Bosnian tour guide (Mina) and Macedonian bus driver (Marion) are all very good. We were very satisfied with their service :)
  2. It was a good value for money trip since we covered a lot of countries and cities. Except for in Greece, the hotels were quite good. The food offered were mostly good too. Some hotels, the breakfast buffet were very good!
  3. Visit to Ohrid was quite good even though our lunch there was terrible. Love the relaxing cruise at the lake.
  4. Ample shopping time for those who are shopaholics :P
  5. Via Vacation's annual Hari Raya Open House for their customers. Great food and the owner Puan Suri is very sociable and friendly.
Dislikes:
  1. The timing sucks. It was too hot! I lost my voice and came back sick :( To go there in early April is a better time I think.
  2. We went there in spring because we were hoping for lots of flowers, unfortunately the places we visited are not known for flowers. Luckily there were some fruiting orange trees :P
  3. Not enough time were given to take pictures at Meteora area in Kalambaka. 5 minutes! 10 minutes! Seriously?!! More frustrating because this was the reason why I joined the Balkan trip for the third time. More time were allocated for shopping and pee stops than sightseeing!
  4. Journey from Ohrid to Kalambaka and from Kalambaka to Athens were very long, we reached the city late and thus had a very late lunch. Maybe they should simply forgo lunch (with an appropriate reduction in tour price of course :P) and when we arrived we can just concentrate on having an early dinner. This was one of the reasons why less time were given for sightseeing, the tour leader and bus driver were trying to reach the city earlier so that we can have our lunch.
I've uploaded 218 posts for this trip in my instagram account mkhasha.n.travels (#mks2018Balkan). This time round the videos have less commentary from me since I honestly don't know what to say and in the middle of the tour I lost my voice :P

Baltic & Poland: Winter - March/April 2018

I am currently on my way to join a trip organised by Redha Travel and Tours to three Baltic states (Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania) and Poland. Too bad we cannot cover Belarus due to the difficulty of obtaining visa. No embassy in Malaysia. You need to go to Indonesia to get one. You can get visa on arrival if you arrive via Minsk International Airport. Unfortunately that will make our tour itinerary a bit haywire. Our trip starts in Tallinn and ends in Warsaw. Minsk is closer to Vilnius.

This tour costs RM9.5k per person. Not a full board tour. No lunch provided only breakfast and dinner. My second trip with Redha and this is their first trip to the Baltic states.

Looking at the map I just realised that there is a region in between Lithuania and Poland. A quick google informed me that it is called Kaliningrad. It is both a city and a state in the Russian Federation. Before it was annexed by USSR after World War II, the area was part of a unified German state called East Prussia for 700 years. Its capital was the beautiful medieval city of Konigsberg. It was destroyed during World War II. Its current state of decay is all the more depressing given its rich past. Today, Kaliningrad is little more than a spreading mass of gray apartment blocks. A forgotten Russian "island" trapped in Europe.

I guess Kaliningrad is not ready to welcome a group of Malaysian travellers huh?

Since this is my first trip in 2018 and there is no longer any backlog posting of previous travels, I was thinking of changing my blog and instagram style.

Instead of photos I will try to do more videos with commentary. There will of course be a bit of photos to capture still objects like food, flowers, sunsets etc but I will try to keep it to the minimum. Will also try to group similar photos and videos together so there will be less individual posts to clutter the instagram account. I will also introduce the number of countries that I have visited so far in "My World Countdown". Wish me luck! I hope I have the strength and discipline to do it.

Our itinerary is as follows:
26 March 2018    Kuala Lumpur - Istanbul
27 March 2018    Istanbul - Tallinn
28 March 2018    Tallinn
29 March 2018    Tallinn - Parnu - Riga
30 March 2018    Riga - Sigulda - Riga
31 March 2018    Riga
1 April 2018         Riga - Vilnius
2 April 2018         Vilnius - Trakai - Vilnius
3 April 2018         Vilnius - Warsaw
4 April 2018         Warsaw
5 April 2018         Warsaw
6 April 2018         Warsaw - Istanbul
7 April 2018         Kuala Lumpur

POST MORTEM (updated on 15 October 2018)

I should have done this months ago but unfortunately I was not inspired enough to write. Now I have to dig into my memory to remember what I like and don't like about this trip :P

Likes:
  1. The timing of the trip which was early spring. Since both my mom and I love snow but hate winter, this was a perfect timing for us. We were blessed with a lot of snow still on the ground and gentle snow falling during the trip but minus the brutal cold temperature :)
  2. Since the itinerary was set by our group, we decided to take it easy so we stayed between 2 to 3  nights at each city. It was quite relaxing and we didn't have to wake up at ungodly hour either and ample time to eat leisurely breakfast :)
  3. Our local tour guide, Minda was very nice. His first time handling a Malaysian group. Our bus driver was good too, unfortunately I forgot his name. Sorry!
  4. Istanbul city tour with breakfast. Due to our long transit (8+ hours), we were entitled to a free city tour organised by Turkish Airlines.
  5. Visit to Hard Rock Cafe Warsaw and a factory outlet which are not in the original itinerary.
Dislikes:
  1. Bad management of the group by our Malaysian tour leader. Case in point during the free Istanbul city tour. He lost half the group due to lack of research on the meeting point for the tour and no clear communication on how the group should proceed after we disembarked from the plane.
  2. Since this is my second trip with Redha, I noticed their lackadaisical attitude in adhering to the itinerary. My first trip with them, they cancelled the visit to two museums (no refund of our paid museum tickets however) so this time round we were a bit vigilant and managed to stop this unethical practice. They tried to cancel the trip to concentration camp at Treblinka, Poland due to not enough time to reach the hotel for prayer and a visit to a city palace in Warsaw to make time for more shopping.
  3. Trakai Castle was closed due to a holiday when went there. Very disappointing and very bad management of our ground operator.
  4. Same restaurant for dinner at each city. Lack of food variety. Surely there are more than one halal restaurant at each city? A bit lazy don't you think? Luckily the food was plentiful and quite tasty.
I've uploaded 131 posts of this trip in my instagram account mkhasha.n.travels (#mks2018Baltic). Sorry that the commentary of the videos are not so good. Pretty repetitive and a bit boring. What do you expect from a newbie videographer? Do enjoy them nonetheless :P

Brunei: Summer - October 2017

I went to Brunei with no expectation but came back pleasantly surprised. If you read my blog, you know that I’ve done a lot of repeat visits over the years. Could’t help myself even though it doesn’t help increase the number of countries that I have visited so far. Since I am obligated to myself to increase the number (I’m not getting any younger!), what better way than to visit a country that is so close to mine? Won’t cost me a bomb and yet will get me closer to my target :)

So I bought Air Asia plane tickets, booked 3 nights stay at Star Lodge Jerudong and off me and mom go to a new country that is basically at our doorstep. After 2 hours of flights we arrived at my number 57th country and my mom’s 46th. Except for the 1 hour flight delay, everything went smoothly. When we arrived, our complimentary airport pick up was already there. Patiently waiting for us :)

The road to the city centre was jammed due to the opening ceremony of a new bridge. So our plan to witness that ceremony was scrapped in favour of visiting Jerudong Park’s musical fountain that night. I was glad that the choice was taken out of our hands because the musical fountain show was simply awesome. I personally think that it was even better than Dubai’s dancing fountain! Besides us, there were only one other family who watched the show. So it felt like that the whole show was staged just for us. I guess this is how the super rich felt when they organised a concert just for themselves :P

NOTE: The musical fountain show is not available everyday. Only 2 shows a week, on Saturday at 8.30 pm and 9.15 pm. Please be mindful of this fact if you wish to see the show :)

Jerudong Park was not in my original itinerary. I'm not really a fan of theme parks. I remember when I was young the park was very famous. A free theme park built by the sultan for his family and subjects. Over the years it was reported that the park went to a decline. We were lucky that the theme park was rejuvenated and the new playground was opened in July 2017. It is no longer free, which I think is a good thing. Many people do not appreciate free stuff anyway. They tend to take it for granted at best or more often than not will abuse it.

I was pretty impressed with the fairness of the ticket prices. Reasons why I don’t like theme parks; hate the crowds, hate the long queue, not adventurous enough to enjoy the more interesting rides. At Jerudong Park, if you do not wish to take any rides, they allow you to enter the park for a mere B$2 :) Tell me which other theme park in the world is that benevolent?

Another thing that surprises me is the price of the food and drinks. We are so used to the overpriced food and drinks at theme parks and airports all around the world. A typical capitalist behaviour taking advantage of the captive customers. In Brunei, there is no such thing. Same pricing as in the city. No prohibition to bring outside food inside the theme park either. We had seafood tomyam served with rice and mee kolok at the park’s food court. The seafood tomyam was delicious. For a mere B$5, we got 5 big prawns and lots of squids :)

For an all inclusive ticket price of B$20, Jerudong Park is a steal. They have A LOT of rides and activities and most importantly NO QUEUE. If you are a senior citizen, you need only pay B$5 to enjoy it all. Jerudong Park can also boasts about having a double decker carousel. Even Disneyland Japan cannot claim to have one! I recommend big family with a lot of kids to come here for a family day type of holiday. Do come in a group of 15-20 people. You can then imagine as though the park is built just for your family pleasure :P

On our third day we visited Bandar Seri Begawan, the city. It feels just like another town in Malaysia. We went to take a look at Kampung Ayer from afar. Initially we planned to crossover the Brunei River to go to the water village but decided otherwise after seeing there is no proper ferry with fix time and drop off/pick up point. If you wish to crossover, you just hail the private sampan to take you there. I observed that the private sampans will then try to convince you to take a tour of the water village for a negotiated fare of B$50-B$10 per person. I hate negotiated fare. More often than not I will be conned, so we decided to give it a miss. Next we visit the Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque. Beautiful and very well maintained. After the mosque, we went to the Regalia Museum. We spent around 1 hour there. Worth taking a look if you have the time.

Next we had a late lunch at Tamu Selera. Tamu Selera is famous for their ayam penyet (B$3). It is a fried chicken served with rice and raw vegetables, to be eaten with spicy sambal. Besides ayam penyet, we ordered ikan lele and banana fritters. In Johor, we eat banana fritters with spicy sambal kicap or sugar depending on your preference. Here, they eat with condensed milk :) After a satisfying lunch, we headed back to Yayasan Hassanal Bolkiah to wait for the hotel shuttle. Our scheduled pick up time was at 3 pm. We arrived at Yayasan at around 2.30 pm so we look around and found a shop selling good looking Brunei metal fridge magnets for B$4 each. There are nice cheaper ones made of clay selling 3 for B$10.

Our flight home the next day was at 4.20 pm. We could squeeze more touristy stuff in morning if we so inclined but decided to just laze around at the hotel till check out time at 12 noon. We purposely go to the airport early so that we can check out the newly upgraded airport. The airport is really cosy. Spanking clean and manned by polite and professional staffs. They even have the most beautiful airport surau in the world!

Air Asia Brunei deserves a special mention. The staffs truly follow the rule. I’ve flown with the infamous stingy Ryanair, even Ryanair is not as strict! Other airlines will do a sampling check of cabin bag weight but Air Asia Brunei actually weighs each and every cabin bags (and handbags!) not once but twice! First, when they verify your boarding pass. The second time when you enter the boarding gate. Who would have thought that laid-back Bruneians are such a stickler?

Our itinerary was as follows:
14 October 2017    Kuala Lumpur - Bandar Seri Begawan
15 October 2017    Jerudong Park
16 October 2017    Bandar Seri Begawan
17 October 2017    Bandar Seri Begawan - Kuala Lumpur

Total damage for this trip was RM1.3k for 2 people. I brought B$100 and came back with B$28. We had a relaxing and an enjoyable holiday. Will I do a repeat trip to Brunei? Maybe not but I’m glad I went there at least once :)

I have uploaded 278 pictures and 140 videos of Brunei for your viewing pleasure.

Hong Kong & Macau: Summer - September 2017

It has been awhile since I flew using Air Asia with my mom. My mom haven't even seen our new airport KLIA2. So when there was some sort of sale by Air Asia (they were always on promotion of some sort :P), I managed to grab a fairly good deal of return tickets to Hong Kong & Macau. We decided to fly to Hong Kong and come back to Malaysia from Macau.

I was having a tough time to decide how many days to spend in Hong Kong vis-a-vis Macau. Initially 4:3. Eventually it became 5:2 since a lot of people say that there is nothing to see in Macau. On hindsight, I should have returned a day later. 5 nights were just right for Hong Kong but 2 nights were simply too short for Macau. 3 nights would be better.

This was my second trip to Hong Kong. My first time was many moons ago back in the late 90s. Happy to say that Hong Kong is as vibrant as ever and with a lot more of highrise buildings! We can see so many ongoing constructions almost everywhere too.

What I love about Hong Kong is how tourist friendly this country is. Even though their people are not really fluent in English but they make English available everywhere i.e. signages, brochures, public transportation announcements. So if you do your research well in the internet and also with the help of Google Maps, you can get to the places that you wish to visit without any interaction with the locals at all. The locals are too busy for you anyway :P

Their Octopus Card was so convenient too. You can buy it at the airport and if you are like us going to Macau, you can return them at the last MRT station prior to boarding the ferry to Macau and get back your deposit and credit balance. Take note however that they will charge you HK$9 if your card is less than 90 days old.

We stayed at Ibis North Point due to its proximity to North Point MRT Station and Airport Bus A11's last stop. The room and the ensuite bathroom were super small. But after awhile, it grew on us. You don't have to walk so far to get to everything :P The room came with breakfast for 2. The breakfast selection was acceptable. More variety during weekends than weekdays. Never knew that the hotels did that :)

We had two halal meals while we were here. The famous Wai Kee Curry's roast duck and dimsum at Islamic Centre Canteen (ICC). I don't mind going to ICC again, unfortunately it was so far from any MRT station. I was simply too lazy to walk just to eat :P The fruits at Bowrington Market were quite cheap too. We bought lots of cherries and plums. Very sweet :)

We had a great time in Hong Kong despite the heat. We felt very safe going out at night. We went there 2 weeks after typhoon Hato and Pakhar hit both Hong Kong and Macau. When we arrived, there was no remnants of destruction in Hong Kong but in Macau the cleaning up and restoration were still in progress. Guia Fortress were closed due to repair. So disappointing. Imagine hiking so far up the hill and found out that it was closed. No notice whatsoever were posted anywhere prior to reaching the gate to the lighthouse.

If Hong Kong is tourist friendly, Macau is a direct opposite. The locals truly cannot speak English at all. They are not very helpful either. Their public buses while extensive and cheap were unfriendly to non locals. Their public bus offers no change. So you better make sure you have coins instead of notes in your hands. Their Macau Pass costs MOP120 (deposit 20, credit 100). Funnily if you return the pass, they will only refund back the deposit. The remaining credit is considered donation to them! So imagine if you plan to stay there for 2 days. You will never be able to finish the credit. At most you will use only MOP20-30. So more than 50% of the credit will be free money to the government. I wonder how much their "No Change" policy generate free income for their country? Good business model huh? Is it any wonder then that the tourists will try to utilise the free shuttle provided by the hotels to get around Macau? Unfortunately, the free shuttle are meant to carry casino goers so they don't really cover tourists sites. You have to walk quite far to reach the tourist sites. So if you were in Macau, I recommend you hire an English speaking taxi to ferry you around for the day.

Another thing to note in Macau is their hotel cum casino cum shopping malls are huge. So even though in the map it showed their location as side by side, you have to walk very far to cross over. For the first time in history, one of my feet was having blisters while walking in a mall! I was wearing my comfy Crocs, not high heels! What an experience :P

On our second day in Macau, it was so hot that we cut short our excursion to only half a day. We went back to the hotel and stayed there until check out time the next day. I thought to go out at night to see the lights but decided to take a rest instead. I figure since Macau is quite close to Malaysia, I can always do a repeat visit if I were so inclined in the future :)

Going to the Macau Airport from the city centre was dirt cheap via MT1 bus. MOP4.20 per person. Naturally we pay MOP9 :P It was a hassle free and comfy ride. There were no delay in both our flight to Hong Kong and our return flight from Macau. Thank God. When I came back I found out that Air Asia flight to Bangkok was delayed for more than 5 hours!

Despite a none too stellar experience in Macau, I found that the whole trip was quite fun. No regrets. Will I visit Hong Kong and Macau again? Maybe not. There are many more interesting countries to do a repeat visit :) Total damage for the whole trip for 2 person was RM3.9k.

The itinerary was as follows:
6 September 2017     Kuala Lumpur - Hong Kong
7 September 2017     Hong Kong
8 September 2017     Hong Kong
9 September 2017     Hong Kong
10 September 2017   Hong Kong
11 September 2017   Hong Kong - Macau
12 September 2017   Macau
13 September 2017   Macau - Kuala Lumpur

I have uploaded 359 photos and 164 videos of Hong Kong and 145 photos and 120 videos of Macau for your viewing pleasure.

Scandinavia: Spring - April 2017

This is my second trip to this region this year and my third altogether. Nope I didn't embark on a new career as a tour guide just in case you are wondering :P I was instead seduced by the itinerary and the fact that my wacky friends are going (the previous two trips I went with my mom). So living by the principles of "Money Not Spent Is Not Yours" and "Don't Live Like A Miser So That You Will Die Rich", I decided to join them. Furthermore the previous trips did not cover Finland.

Since we went during second half of April, I was expecting more flowers and less snow but much to my delight we were blessed with a lot of snowfalls and even an occasional hail. I'm sure the locals think otherwise. They must be sick of snow by now and are patiently waiting for summer. I had such a great time playing with snow. The weather and temperture throughout the visit was also very good. Great time to visit this region if you like snow but hate to travel during winter. You get to enjoy the snow while the temperature is quite mild. If you like flowers however, go during second half of May :)

Going back to Scandinavia weather. Sometimes it was so weird. It will snow for maybe 15 minutes and then the sun will come out. I experienced the same in Ireland, thought it was unique to Ireland. Obviously not. The Irish said that if you don't like the weather, just wait for 15 minutes. I guess the same will be applicable here :)

Of the four countries, I like Norway the best. I think their landscape can challenge Iceland's in terms of beauty. All these Scandinavian countries are so clean. The mark of a developed nation. They are also very protective of the environment. Renewable energy is also a big thing in these countries.

This time round we went with Redha Travel and Tours. It is a young company, incorporated in 2015. It is a small family business that specialises in Muslim tours with rich retiree friends as their main customers. Frankly this is the first tour I joined that is accompanied by three company representatives. Father as the tour leader, mother and son as assistants.

We were joined by a local tour guide, Ece Boran in Copenhagen. An energetic, friendly, patient and fun Turkish lady. She loves to take pictures and videos of us. Her name however is one of the most difficult names to pronounce. The "c" in Ece is suppose to sound in between "j" and "c", so we ended up calling her AJ or Acer. The right pronunciation (I think) is Ajer. Luckily she is a good sport :)

Our bus driver Melis is an Estonian. Superb driver and kept the bus (and most importantly its windows) very clean during the trip. Bravo! He is friendly and funny but since he is not very fluent in English, sometimes we simply cannot understand his joke. Sorry Melis!

The full board 11days 9nights tour price was RM13300 on a twin sharing basis. Value for money since they offered great accommodation, quality food albeit a bit monotonous, awesome private cruises and interesting activities.

The itinerary was as follows:
18 April 2017   Kuala Lumpur - Doha
19 April 2017   Doha - Copenhagen
20 April 2017   Copenhagen - Malmo - Goteborg - Oslo
21 April 2017   Oslo - Geilo
22 April 2017   Geilo - Flam - Sogndal
23 April 2017   Sogndal - Briksdal - Otta
24 April 2017   Otta - Lillehammer - Mora
25 April 2017   Mora - Stockholm
26 April 2017   Stockholm - Helsinki
27 April 2017   Helsinki
28 April 2017   Helsinki - Doha
29 April 2017   Doha - Kuala Lumpur

Overall I am quite satisfied with Redha. Their itinerary was superb. The only problem is they did not deliver all they promised in the itinerary. For example, the visit to Skansen Open Air Museum was cancelled due to a request from some members of the group for a longer shopping time. It was not made clear to the rest of the group that the visit to Skansen Open Museum is cancelled because of that. Visit to Suomenlinna Museum was also cancelled with no reason provided whatsoever.

If you follow my travel pictures you noticed that I rarely get to visit mosques overseas since I mostly joined non Muslims tours which visited a lot of churches (which is fine since Christianity is the main religion in the world and their churches are mostly architecturally grand). So I was quite excited to get to visit two mosques during this trip. How annoying when our trip to Helsinki Mosque was cancelled due to Friday prayers. If during Friday prayers the mosque is out of bounds for visitors, why is the itinerary not adjusted so that we go to the mosque at different time or day? This lackadaisical attitude of "Over Promised Under Delivered" is so frustrating.

Despite all the dramas and broken promises, I still had a great time. The group members were mostly sporting and fun. The weather was superb. We get to take a lot of fun and awesome pictures. It was a wonderful trip. Taglines "Cap Ayam" and "Faktor Usia" will forever bring smiles to the participants. I look forward to our next Baltic tour with Redha hopefully same time next year :)

This is my fourth visit overseas that I did not exchange even a single cent of local currency. Granted that Finland uses Euro. I don't consider Euro as a local currency though :P Just bring Euro leftovers from your previous overseas trips. They accept credit cards almost everywhere, so having cash is not so critical here :)
